Indications: Acitrin (Cetirizine) is indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis (seasonal or perennial) and chronic urticaria (hives).
Pharmacology: Cetirizine, the active ingredient in Acitrin, is a second-generation antihistamine. It works by selectively inhibiting peripheral H1 receptors, preventing histamine from causing allergy symptoms like itching, swelling, and redness.
Dosage & Administration:
- Adults and children over 12 years: 1 tablet (10 mg) once daily.
- Children aged 6-12 years: 5 mg (half tablet) twice daily.
- Dosage adjustments may be needed for renal impairment.
Interaction:
- May interact with sedatives, alcohol, and other central nervous system depressants, enhancing drowsiness.
- Avoid use with theophylline and ritonavir as it may increase the concentration of Cetirizine.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to Cetirizine or any of its components.
- Severe renal impairment (Creatinine clearance < 10 mL/min).
Side Effects: Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, and fatigue. Rarely, it may cause an allergic reaction, including difficulty breathing or swelling.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Pregnancy: Cetirizine should be used with caution during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester.
- Lactation: Cetirizine can pass into breast milk, so it should be used cautiously during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
- Use caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
- Avoid operating heavy machinery or driving if drowsiness occurs.
Use in Special Populations:
- Elderly: Use with caution as renal function may be reduced.
- Children: Safe for children above 6 years, dosage adjustment is required.
