Adryl Syrup

Generic:

• Generic Name: Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride

Dosage Form:

• Form: Syrup

Indications: Adryl is indicated for the treatment of:

• Allergic Conditions: Seasonal, perennial, and vasomotor rhinitis
• Skin Conditions: Urticaria, angioneurotic oedema, and pruritic conditions
• Emergency Conditions: Anaphylaxis
• Miscellaneous Uses: Premedication for emesis and motion sickness, Meniere's disease, and Parkinsonism

Pharmacology:

• Mechanism of Action: Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine that competes with histamine for H1-receptor sites on effector cells in the GI tract, blood vessels, and respiratory tract. It also has anticholinergic and sedative effects.

Dosage Guideline:

• Adults: 25-50 mg three times a day with an additional 50 mg at night.
• Children:
  • 1 to 5 years: 5 mg (2.5 ml of elixir) 4 times a day
  • More than 6 years: 10 mg (5 ml of elixir) 4 times a day

Route of Administration:

• Administration: Orally

Interaction:

• Drug Interactions:
  • Significantly reduces the absorption of the antituberculous agent para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS) from the gastrointestinal tract.
  • CNS depressants may enhance the sedative effects.
  • Anticholinergic drugs may increase anticholinergic side effects.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity: Known hypersensitivity to Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride.
• Impaired Function: Contraindicated in patients with impaired hepatic or renal function.

Side Effects:

• Common Side Effects: Sedation, dizziness, tinnitus, fatigue, ataxia, blurred vision, diplopia, euphoria, and epigastric discomfort.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

• Pregnancy: Category B. Use only if clearly needed, as there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
• Lactation: Diphenhydramine is excreted in breast milk, so it is not recommended during lactation.

Precautions & Warnings:

• Caution: Exercise caution in activities where drowsiness is undesirable, such as driving or operating machinery.
• Alcohol/CNS Depressants: Avoid concomitant use with alcohol or CNS depressants, as they may increase drowsiness.
