Generic Name:
Fexofenadine Hydrochloride
Dosage Form:
Tablet
Indications:
- Allergic rhinitis
- Chronic idiopathic urticaria
Pharmacology:
Fexofenadine is a selective antihistamine that acts as an inverse agonist on H1 receptors, preventing histamine from binding and triggering allergic reactions such as pruritus, rhinorrhea, and watery eyes. It does not cross the blood-brain barrier, minimizing CNS side effects like sedation.
Dosage Guidelines:
- Allergic Rhinitis & Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria:
- Adults and children (12 years and older): 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg or 180 mg once daily.
- Children (6 to 11 years): 30 mg twice daily.
- Children (2 to 11 years): 30 mg or 5 ml suspension twice daily.
- Renal impairment: Adjust to 60 mg or 30 mg once daily depending on age.
Route of Administration:
Orally
Drug Interactions:
Fexofenadine does not undergo hepatic metabolism, reducing the likelihood of liver-based drug interactions. However, co-administration with erythromycin or ketoconazole increases fexofenadine plasma levels. It should not be taken with antacids containing aluminum and magnesium within 15 minutes due to reduced bioavailability.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its components.
Side Effects:
- Common: Headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea.
- Uncommon: Fatigue.
- Rare: Tachycardia, rash, pruritus, gastrointestinal issues.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Pregnancy: Limited data; should only be used when necessary.
- Lactation: Not recommended as Fexofenadine may pass into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Caution is advised for elderly patients, those with renal impairment, or patients with a history of cardiovascular disease due to potential side effects like tachycardia. While Fexofenadine is unlikely to impair driving or machine operation, individual reactions should be monitored.
